Another expert in state TV talk show explains:

  • “there’s no language, it’s just a dialect of Russian that we all easily understand”

Surprisingly, whenever Russian TV quotes clips from Ukrainian politicians, they always provide dubbing or subtitles in Russian 🤔

  • “In 10, 15, 20 years we will regain control over all these territories and all these nations that call themselves independent will be absorbed into a big Russian home. In 500 million Europe, there will appear a 200 million Russian-speaking force, speaking one common language, that can easily lay claims to Balkans and Poland and etc”

This is followed by rather racist remarks where he speaks about inability to push back against this “200 million Russian-speaking force” by Germany and England “with their Turks and Pakistanis”.

If you hear anyone speaking about “Russia’s legitimate security concerns”, just play them this talk.

It is a classic representation of Pan-Slavism, an idea that all Slavic nations form a single cultural space which is going to be united under one leadership (Russian, obviously) and one language (Russian too, obviously), that started to be popular in19th century after Russia’s territorial conquests in Eastern Europe. But since it was literally a conquest, all these territories have fallen apart as soon as Russian Empire weakened, most nations switched to Latin script and formalised grammar of their own languages in response to the past attempts of forced russification.

Today Pan-Slavism can be only described as delusional idea, because if Russia has in any way united Slavic nations of Europe, that’s only in enmity towards Putin’s regime.

This talk represents an attitude that is very specific to the most radical “realist-geopolitical” wing of Russian elites, who treat multi-million nations as an entirely plastic matter, which can be molded into any shape they like. There’s no question whether they want to speak Russian or want to join “big Russian home”. And even if 90% doesn’t, that doesn’t matter as long as an abstract “Russia” wants (read: Putin and a few other radicals) and has a physical force to impose its wishes on others.

War in Ukraine reinforced the evidence that Eastern Europe’s security concerns since 1990’s were perfectly legitimate and their applications to NATO were entirely justified, because since this “restoration of Russian Empire” postulates were present in Russia since USSR collapse, they only became mainstream under Putin.

A look at the war crimes in from the legal point of view

When Russian crimes in Bucha, Borodianka and Irpin were discovered towards the end of March 2022, the world began to ponder what name should be given to the criminal acts committed by the Russian troops. The parliaments in Poland, the Czech Republic, Canada and the Baltic states recognized the aggressive war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine as an act of genocide. But it is not these political proc- lamations or even the very savagery of the Russian occupiers that justify the legal qualication of the acts committed by the representa- tives of Russia as genocide under international law. What matters here is the intent to destroy the Ukrainian national group, demonstrated in numerous public appearances by the highest political leadership of the Russian Federation and implemented by Russian soldiers operating on the Ukrainian territory. This paper aims to show that Russian crimes in Ukraine can be qualied as genocide under the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 9 December 1948, and that in fact they constitute a continuation of the Kremlin’s policies towards the Ukrainian nation. In order to better present this thesis, the text refers to the work of the author of the notion of geno- cide – Raphael Lemkin.

Eastern Europe's kitchen — bread makers came up with a simple invention — bread with built-in сало (salo).

The latter is translated as lard, but while lard is butter-like fat after being melted, salo is just solid fat layer, like bacon without meat (and it comes in a billion of recipes and spices).

Salo is mostly associated with kitchen, but also popular in and kitchen, while — sadly — almost impossible to find in . But I only rarely visit the latter these days, so maybe something has improved in this aspect recently...

Kremlin plotting to liquidate seize control of army

According to sources within the Russian military leadership, the has made a decision on a radical “solution” to the issue of dragging Belarus into Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.

City council of Leipzig named a street after Borys Romanchenko, a former prisoner of the Buchenwald death camp who survived and lived in Kharkiv until March 2022, when he was killed by a rocket hitting his apartment at the age of 97.

His death was kind of symbolic, because back in March Russia still used the narrative of "denazification" as the justification for the war, and there was barely anything more Nazi than killing a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp during shelling of residential homes.

Empty Kherson art museum in despair after entire collection stolen by Russia

Housed in a grand imperial building with a view out onto the Dnipro River, the Kherson Fine Arts Museum once hosted one of the richest collections in all of Ukraine

Of the over 14,000 works in its collection, barely anything remains. Russia’s looted anything deemed to be of financial or cultural value.
