A view of the pre-1948 Palestinian village of Bayt Mahsir in the Al-Quds subdistrict, Palestine, in 1932. 🇵🇸

The village was depopulated by invading Zionist militias during the 1948

Never? I took a random pick of Lajjun . It seemed more comprehensive than other articles I remembered. So I checked three others whose names I did not remember. Three of the four mentioned attacks as the cause (in one of the three: abandoned after Tiberias was taken).

There is quite some activity on those articles in hewiki.

Articles:

  • Lajjun
  • Ghuwayr Abu Shusha
  • איסדוד / إسدود
  • Al-Mirr

I checked the edit history for the article of Lajjun:
https://he.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D7%9C%D7%92%27%D7%95%D7%9F&action=history
Initial work was done by an editor (Left-leaning) on Apr-25 2023. A while later you naturally see other editors working on it, as it is a new article. One of them is a known Right-leaning editor. So the article got the attention. And so far so good.

Note that on hewiki there is distrust for some Palestinian historians. In this case a major source is Morris's book.

Note that the Hebrew and the English articles provide completing narratives. The English article completely misses the Jewish forces' motivation of the time: the road to Jerusalem.

The Hebrew article notes that the village was a base to several Arab military units at the time and notes the fierce battle there. It notes that the village was abandoned, but as part of a paragraph that describes an attack on it.

Hmm.... some facts in that Hebrew article seem to be based on non-optimal sources. Maybe this could be improved.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas: Jews 'are NOT Semites'

Zionist leader Arthur Ruppin: German are NOT Semites but Aryan.

Yet Abbas in an antisemite, even though this idea is not really new (research: https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms3543), while Israel is naming buildings after the leader Ruppin, who personally met with Himmler's mentor, Hans F. K. Günther.

@oatmeal @KarunaX @histodons @israel @palestine
Right. Everything was good under the Ottoman (an empire of Turks from Mid-Asia). That period is simply not as well documented, but you have some stories of how this village came to be after a group of people had to run away from a vendetta in another place. Peaceful it was not.

Actually, there's no solution here should a police state be established. Except air conditioned police cars and buildings.

@bp @kjr @israel @climate
Why would you want to do rebuild so much? So much construction takes much work (and cement) and the near-term return is not that large. Not to mention not very practical even in a police state.

Improving insulation of houses can reduce costs. That's doable.

If I had more political power, I would start with public transport on Saturday. Also, there would be much more solar power in the grid if the electric company managed to build more central lines.

Side note: the "railroad to Riad" is probably a pipe dream, but all the Saudi part and almost all the Israeli part is already built. "Only" the Jordanian part is missing.

The Beduin "unrecognized villages" are a big problem. Many have been settled over the years. Those that remain are not so much villages and too scattered to provide useful infrastructure.

That said, the Beduin Authority has not had good enough interaction with them.

While researching Rashid al-Haj Ibrahim's activities, I came across this photo from his personal collection. The photo shows a gathering of the paramilitary scout movement al-Najjada (النجادة).

It is one of many thousands of photos and various Palestinian heritage artifacts Israeli forces looted during the 1948 war. Most of it is still buried in Israel's various military archives, under restricted access or straight out misleading labels, so to make it difficult for historian to find them and build a fuller and richer social and cultural history of Palestinian society before 1948.

BTW: according to Israeli copyright law of pre 2008 (basically the British 1911 copyright law with patches), any picture published more than 50 years ago is in the public domain. Were those pictures published in any way?

There are various groups (e.g. Wikimedia people) who tend to get such old pictures released for thoe grounds.

@histodons @israel @palestine For Israelis to learn Arabic is not a political statement. Half of us grew up in homes in which some dialect of Arabic or Farsi were spoken. So ignoring Haaretz's uncontrollable urge to orientalize everything not grounded in (how ironic) , Maktoob (מַכְּתוּבּ, مكتوب), co-founded by prof. Yehouda Shaharabani-Shenhav, is one of the most inspiring projects in the academia these days. I can make valid arguments for learning Arabic. "Half of us grea up in homes where Arabic or Farsi was spoken" is not one.

  • Farsi is not Arabic
  • That Arabic was typically not Shami Arabic (Yemen, Iraqi and certainly Mugreb Arabic are quite different. Syrian one is closer).
  • What about Yiddish, Russian, Hungarian, German and such?

(That said, I need to catch up on my Arabic)

@histodons @israel the Jewish right anti sentiment, calling for its abolition, stems from the fact that Palestinian refugees are a constant reminder of the ongoing . UNRWA’s original mandate though was for PALESTINE refugees of the 1948 war, not PALESTINIANS. This meant both Arabs and Jews. After 1948 Israel took ownership of the Jewish refugee problem https://cup.columbia.edu/book/refuge-and-resistance/9780231202855 https://www.unrwa.org/palestine-refugees

(Nitpicking: and also of Palestian Arabs [Term used at the time]) and not just for Palestinian Jews [ditto] in Israel. Also, the arguments made by various people in the Israeli Right against UNRWA are also different than that).

The Yemenites were newcomers at this time (immigrated at 1882 or so, after Ottoman rule renewed connection to Yemen). They were less wolcomed elsewhere in Jerusalem and had to settle South of it, near Silwan.

, along with three other Israeli companies, has enjoyed a status of "major exporter" that got them really low tax rates. In recent years Israel has become a nex exporter and this tax bonus came under fire.

So the real interesting bit in this story is that Intel agreed to pay a higher (though still low) tax rate. Is this really the case? Interesting.

This is actually a sensible and peaceful solution to the occupation of Palestine without having to remove anyone from their homes.

> Past wrongs, from 1948 to present, will be amended, but without creating new wrongs.

> The two states will share institutions of a confederate nature, to decide on joint matters.

There are some serious people behind this. Reading it, I disagree with some of their arguments:

  • Two armed forces on the same geographical area. Source of problems.
  • They claim to have strong support from the Palestinian side, yet their board(?) hardly has non-Israeli Palestinians.

Generally I think that two states is still a path of less problems.

:xr: Can we please get back to our pre-pandemic conversations about the overwhelming amount of CO2 generated by the massive number of in-person events?

🌍 And more importantly, how to stop?

💡 Perhaps someone can work on a tracker of estimated carbon emissions for each major conference.

I personally just doesn't work for me. When I'm in a conference, I'm fully immersed in it. When I'm not there, there are other things I do.

I tried to take time off for a conference and stay at home, but it didn't work: I got distracted. I considered the idea of local gatherings to view the remote conference, but never got it to work.
